Did you know that Crete has lakes? This Private Tour lets you discover Crete’s Lakes, their incredible flora and fauna and the Natura 2000 environment that engulfs them!
The artificial lake of Agia (Ayia) is located near the village of Agia, 9 km west of Chania. It is a small lake of 450 acres, which is close to the valley of Fasas. This small lake hosts the largest variety of aquatic plants in Crete, but also hosts very important species of fauna, such as rare species of ferns and frogs. Moreover, the lake is a shelter for many migratory and non-migratory birds. The ecological significance of Ayia is reflected in the fact that it is protected by international laws.
Crete’s only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km. The lake used to be called Koresia after ancient Korion, a city thought to be in the area with a temple to Athena. The lake used to contain eels but now is better known for its terrapins and tourism. Tavernas and pedalo rental shops line part of the shore.
The lake of Potami is shaped by the Potami dam, in Amari province and was built in 2008, 25km south of Rethymnon. The lake has a capacity of 23 million cubic meters and is one of the most important wetlands in the southeast Mediterranean, with many species of birds and animals being recorded in the area. The dam gathers water from the gorge of Patsos, the small valley of Pantanassa, and the stream of Stavromana originating from Agia Fotini. Just above the barrier, one can still visit the ruined Fort Koules.
